Pre Dressing Prep

Hair and makeup should be completely finished before putting on your dress.

Use a button-up or robe-style outfit while getting ready, so you don’t disturb your hair or makeup.

Choose a clean, spacious area with plenty of natural light.

Wash your hands (or have your dresser do so) to avoid marks on the fabric.

If you're wearing a veil or accessories, put those on after the dress.

Step 2: Use the Right Undergarments

Make sure you’re wearing the exact bra, shapewear, or slip you tried on with the dress (if applicable).

Nude, seamless underwear is best, even if you're wearing a full skirt.

Step 3: Step Into the Dress

Dresses are easier to step into rather than pull over your head.

Have at least one or two clean-handed helpers assist you, ideally the same people who came to your fittings as we would have given them a demo!

Carefully step in, and let your helpers gently pull it up from the waist.

Step 4: Secure the Dress

Fasten any wasit stays and hook and eyes first, as they will help to keep the dress in place.

Followed by any zippers, buttons, corset ties, or hooks from bottom to top, and do it slowly to avoid fabric snags.

For corset-style dresses, tighten gradually and evenly from top to bottom. Don’t over-tighten — you’ll need to breathe and sit comfortably!

Have someone double check everything sits comfortably and fastened correctly!

Step 5: Ready For the Aisle!

Now is the time to put on your shoes, veil, jewelry, and perfume (spray away from the fabric).

Pro Tip:

If your dress has a train or bustle, have someone practice bustling it ahead of time, so there’s no stress during the reception.

Buttons are easier to fasten with a crochet hook so it may be worth bringing one just incase! (only if you have buttons of course)

Putting on your Dress

If wearing a lace up dress, we advise you don’t loosen your gown at any point in the day; your dress has been fitted to you specifically and if loosened this can affect the fit and shape. Fastening your dress properly should ensure it is kept in place, if your dress drops when it is loosened this can also affect the length and might cause you to trip or risk damaging your dress.

·          Do not forget any accessories you may be adding later! You may want to choose a reliable member of the bridal party to look after these for you so that you do not need to worry.

·          Our past brides have passed on tips for looking best in your wedding photos: remember good posture, for slender looking arms push your shoulders back and to give the appearance of a smaller waist hold your elbows slightly out. If you learn of any secrets to pass on let us know!

·          We make sure you have a lesson on bustling your dress at your fittings, but please make sure you have someone available that is confident in doing this for you.

Putting on your Dress

Try not to wear a bra on the morning of your wedding, strap marks on your skin can often be visible for a few hours afterwards and it can be difficult to reduce their appearance. This is especially important if you have a strapless or backless dress.

·          Make sure you, or anyone else touching the dress has no moisturiser, fake tan or make up on their hands or anywhere that could touch the dress.

·          Ensure the person dressing you has not recently applied nail varnish – they are likely to mark newly painted nails and it can easily transfer to the dress. The person dressing you is always better to go for a natural colour as bright red nails are still a danger even a few days after a manicure!

·          We recommend you put your shoes on after you are dressed; you should feel more stable dressing barefoot and will not risk accidental damage.

·          Make sure you are relaxed and cool when putting the dress on, don’t worry if the dress feels a little tight at first, it will loosen up as the fabric warms to you and relaxes a little.

·          Allow yourself plenty of time (at least 45 minutes) to get the dress on, especially if it has a lace up back or lots of buttons. It isn’t likely to take this long, but having extra time allows you to re-fasten the dress if you don’t feel it is on correctly, helps relieve any stress and most importantly allows the fabric time to warm to you; you may find it necessary to tighten a lace up back a little once the dress has relaxed.

During the Day

If wearing a lace up dress, we advise you don’t loosen your gown at any point in the day; your dress has been fitted to you specifically and if loosened this can affect the fit and shape. Fastening your dress properly should ensure it is kept in place, if your dress drops when it is loosened this can also affect the length and might cause you to trip or risk damaging your dress.

·          Do not forget any accessories you may be adding later! You may want to choose a reliable member of the bridal party to look after these for you so that you do not need to worry.

Post Wedding & Dry Cleaning

Remember to put your dress away in the protective bag provided at the end of the night. If hanging, use the ribbon hanging loops in the dress to relieve any stress on delicate fabrics such as lace straps.

·          We recommend you have your dress cleaned as soon as possible after your wedding and can recommend a specialist dry-cleaner - Terrington Burchett 01476 574446. They are the best in the field and offer a courier service, your dress is then returned to you beautifully boxed.

Above all Have a fabulous day!
